After genuinely enjoying the first Dune novel, I figured I might as well keep going right? Wrong. I should have stopped while I was ahead.
Maybe there was more to tell from the first one, but this felt incomplete in itself, and didn't really tie enough off from the first book. I dislike when authors start spinning off threads and subplots without thinking through how it's all going to fit and then "fixing it in the mix" by publishing more books where things evolve. I get it... if you only publish when it's all formed, you end up like Tolkien where when you die you have a bunch of unfinished stuff...
But also at the same time, look at Robert Jordan, who also died before he could finish the Wheel of Time. He spun off so much junk without any idea of what to do with it, and then he died and someone else had to finish it off and it just wasn't possible.
So I guess what I'm saying is, come up with your stories and spend some time "world building" without publishing anything. Settle on the bones - and fight any urges to spin off things without a good reason to do so.
It was shorter than the first one, so at least it was over pretty quickly.
I stopped reading Dune, probably forever, and didn't get much closure on things.
I think I gave this 2 stars out of 5 on Goodreads, but that's being generous, but I'll stick with it. It could have been worse. I'm done with Dune though.
